Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox Santa Barbara Concert reviews
No blisters on these eardrums
I thought the drummer's symbols were under-miked, and the sound was not loud enough. At the start of the show, I thought it might be a bit lame. We were in the last row in the third tier down from the top, maybe they are accustomed to a smaller venue than NJPAC. The early songs in the show (early 60's Ed Sullivan type stuff) were done very well. I wished it was several notches higher in volume. These are no doubt talented musicians, and they do a decent job of interacting with the audience. The drummer can't sing but did a good job on drums, just wished the drums were a little louder and more upfront. The Paul McCartney guy is really good on a couple of lead vocal songs. On some others, he needs to practice the voice a little more. During Hey Jude, the guy became Paul, really impressive and a real crowd pleaser. Lennon guy was good, but the chipmunk-sounding voice (e.g. Lucy in the Sky) was also there on songs that should have had a totally different Lennon voice. As you go through the show, you realize how absurdly talented the Beatles were, as well as being great singers (3 of them). So just don't expect the singing to be spot on, but the music is spot on. The synth/moog guy in the corner fills in all the weird sound effects/horns/keys/tambourine and does a great job. After some of the late-60's psychedelic type songs, by the last 1/3 of the show, it really picked up, and the crowd was loving it (going wild actually). They did 3 or 4 encores that night. So it turned out not to be lame at all but a really memorable event that was well-paced and structured (beside the great music). Best of all, my girlfriend loved it and had a great time!
